Below are a few things that you can do to assist our research and help protect manatees in Mobile Bay.
- Report any manatee sightings to Mobile Manatees via either our website or toll free number, 1-866-493-5803.
- Spread the word. Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to report manatee sightings to Mobile Manatees.
- Purchase a Manatee-shirt. Contact the DISL Estuarium gift shop to buy a Mobile Manatees T-shirt. All proceeds go to support Mobile Manatees outreach program.
- Print and/or laminate flyers, post them in and around your neighborhood or at local docks and marinas. You can print them directly (click here) or call 1-866-493-5803 to request a hard copy by mail.
- Request a banner to identify manatee areas from Save the Manatee Club website to post in waterways.
- Report stranded, injured or dead manatees immediately to Mobile Manatees or directly to U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 251-441-5839 / 251-441-5181.
- Give manatees space. Do not do anything to alter manatees' natural behavior. Do not entice, chase, feed, or touch them. The best rule of thumb is to stay at least 100 feet from manatees. According to federal law any activity that changes manatees' natural behavior is harassment and is illegal.
- Boat with caution. Boat strikes are the leading cause of human-related mortality among manatees. On average, manatees travel at 3 - 4 mph, and can not avoid fast-moving boats. If you are in an area where manatees have been sighted in the past, please make way slowly and travel at no wake speeds, if possible. If you hit a manatee please report it immediately.
- Print and keep emergency numbers on hand to report sightings as well as, stranded, injured, and dead animals or harassment.
- Report other marine mammal strandings (dolphins, whales, seals) immediately to the Southeast Region of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, 1-866-405-3073.
